  • The One about the Embedded Librarian

    📚 In our pilot episode, I have a conversation with Jenna Obee, Director of Library Services, about the Embedded Librarian program. I knew from the start of planning the podcast that Jenna would be one of the first guests, for not only is the Library arguably one of the most powerful yet underused resources in the world of academia, but also because of her genuine passion for what she does. This episode showcases only part of the amazing and impactful work that her and the rest of the team are doing in the Library. And I can always count on a warm and informative conversation with her, signing off with a smile and feeling enlightened. I hope to foster the same sentiments for those who listen to our podcast.

    While talking with Jenna, there were many moments where I celebrated the accomplishments (both anecdotally and found in the data) of the Embedded Librarian program. The program has led to an improvement in students navigating the tutoring services, an increase in students going to the library for assistance, and a deepened student understanding of APA, just to name a few. The program has spread across CTU, with an Embedded Librarian presence in each college and the "to be developed” list of courses continuing to grow.

    From my perspective, the success of the Embedded Librarian program can be summarized by three principles - Being timely. Being present. Being explicit.

    Reflective Prompts 💭

    1. How are your communications with students timely? Are they getting the information that need when they need it?
    2. How are you present while teaching your course or working with students? What does "ideal" presence look like in your interactions with students?
    3. Consider all of the possible areas of confusion for a student in your line of work or in the course you are teaching. Are there opportunities where explicit instruction or communication can be implemented?
