Busoni nasce a Empoli nel 1866; talento precocissimo, Ferruccio respira musica già dalla prima infanzia perché il padre è un talentuoso clarinettista (varie composizioni di Busoni bambino sono dedicate allo strumento del padre) e la madre, triestina, è una valente pianista. La naturale inclinazione musicale del giovanissimo musicista si esprime così in lavori tutt’altro che banali, quale ad es. il Concerto per pianoforte e quartetto d’archi, scritto all’età di 12 anni, e in una svariata serie di composizioni per quartetto e anche per orchestra, oltre naturalmente che per pianoforte.
