Il clamoroso insuccesso della Prima Sinfonia fa precipitare Rachmaninov in una profonda e duratura crisi depressiva. In questa fase giovanile il musicista si sente e vuole essere riconosciuto soprattutto come compositore più che come pianista. Il primo cimento con il genere più impegnativo della Sinfonia lo aveva assorbito per quasi un anno. Anche grazie all’aiuto di un medico, che praticava l’ipnosi, Rachmaninov riesce a recuperare la sua forza creativa. Le composizioni che segnano questa ritrovata fiducia in se stesso sono la Seconda Suite per 2 pianoforti e soprattutto il celebre Secondo Concerto per pianoforte, che gli apre la via di un successo internazionale.
