Al suo ritorno, Marlowe viene arrestato e interrogato dalla polizia, che lo accusa di aver favorito la fuga di un omicida: la moglie di Lennox è stata uccisa. Poco dopo, arriva la notizia del suicidio di Lennox in Messico. Marlowe, però, non crede al suicidio e inizia a indagare, scoprendo che Lennox era coinvolto in un triangolo amoroso e che il suo amico potrebbe aver inscenato la propria morte...
