James J. Heckman, Premio Nobel per l’Economia, ha discusso al Festival dell’Economia di Trento il tema del calo della fertilità globale. Se fino all’Ottocento la popolazione mondiale cresceva, oggi in molti Paesi - ad eccezione del continente africano e di alcune zone dell’America Latina - la natalità diminuisce. Corea del Sud e Cina sono i paesi più colpiti; il Ciad, invece, è tra i Paesi più giovani. Le cause non sono più legate alle risorse alimentari, ma a dinamiche sociali: la maggiore autonomia delle donne, l’ingresso più tardivo nel mondo del lavoro e la posticipazione della prima nascita sono fattori determinanti nel calo delle nascite nei paesi con le economie più avanzate.
