A questa grande partitura ispirata al mito faustiano, Busoni inizia a dedicarsi già nel 1910: dunque per quattordici anni gran parte delle sue energie – peraltro progressivamente declinanti per motivi fisici e psicologici – furono dedicate a quest’opera. Il compito di completare la partitura fu affidato al suo allievo Philip Jarnach e, in tempi più recenti, a Antony Beaumont.
