Pur appartenendo cronologicamente alla prima fase creativa beethoveniana, questa pagina presenta già tutti i tratti del suo ‘secondo stile’. A cominciare da un’audacia senza precedenti nell’impiego delle tonalità. Dedicato al Conte von Fries, il Quintetto fu al centro di una vertenza tra Beethoven e la casa editrice Artaria, risoltasi solo apparentemente a favore di quest’ultima.
