Beneath the murky, slow-moving currents of Arkansas’s White River lies one of the American South’s most enduring aquatic enigmas. First documented during the Civil War when it reportedly overturned a Confederate transport boat, the creature resurfaced with a vengeance in 1937, spotted by hundreds of eyewitnesses who described a massive, gray-skinned beast the size of a boxcar.

The sightings became so frequent and feverish that in 1973, the Arkansas State Legislature took the unprecedented step of establishing an area as a legally protected sanctuary for the beast, making it officially illegal to harm or harass the elusive creature.
