About this listen

On this episode of "Untold Stories" we dive into the origins of the Struggle R&B group "Bogus Ballads."

“Bogus Ballads” was a chaotic but oddly resilient R&B collective built on a deliberately flawed concept: mixing talented singers with proudly off-key performers to humorously “ruin” classic songs in a style dubbed Karaoke or Struggle R&B. Founded by Ro Smithers and Pretty Tony, the group grew with a rotating cast of eccentric members and quickly attracted label interest, but internal dysfunction—ego clashes, forged solo deals, and absurd contract misunderstandings—set the tone for their journey. Their signing came with bizarre terms and creative compromises, like adding vocal tuning that split the group, while petty drama over curl activator, fried chicken, and personal rivalries fueled constant conflict. Even their debut album became a platform for members to insult each other, yet through all the dysfunction, disappearances, and infighting, the group has endured—embodying their own ironic legacy that “Bogus Ballads Ain’t Dead.”
