About this listen

Director Baz Luhrmann joins Dan Gutierrez to talk about EPIC: Elvis Presley in Concert, a cinematic event that brings Elvis Presley back to the big screen with rare footage, restored performances, and unheard recordings.

While working on the 2022 film Elvis, Luhrmann discovered dozens of boxes of long-lost concert footage hidden away for decades. With help from filmmaker Peter Jackson, the team restored the material and created something Luhrmann describes as a “cinematic poem”—part concert film, part immersive experience, and something entirely new.

Audiences are treating the screenings like a live show — cheering, dancing, and celebrating Elvis in a way that feels closer to a world tour the King never got to perform.

Dan and Baz discuss:

The discovery of rare Elvis concert footage

Restoring decades-old film for modern theaters

Why this isn’t a traditional documentary

Elvis’s humor, personality, and creative process

Why audiences are reacting like it’s a live concert

EPIC: Elvis Presley in Concert is now playing in theaters nationwide.
