Très rapidement après l'intervention au Venezuela, Donald Trump a évoqué la question du pétrole. Le pays a les réserves les plus importantes au monde, mais les Etats-Unis les exploitaient déjà par le biais de l'entreprise Chevron. Cette opération a fait s'effondrer le cours du baril et les entreprises pétrolières seront bien réticentes à investir dans un pays rendu encore plus instable. Si tel était le motif de l'intervention, le calcul américain semble donc mauvais!
