Chapter 6 Summary: “Scary Stories”

At lunch, Bella overhears gossip about her and Edward, but most talk is about the upcoming La Push trip. Curious about Edward’s camping plans, she asks her dad, who says the area is more for hunting.

On Saturday, under rare sunshine, Bella joins the student group at La Push beach. They build a fire and explore tide pools. Bella struggles to keep up and falls a few times. Later, a group of teens from the reservation joins them, including Jacob, who remembers Bella from her childhood.

Lauren asks why the Cullens weren’t invited; Sam says, “The Cullens don’t come here.” Bella walks with Jacob and asks about them. He tells her a tribal legend: his people are descended from wolves and once made a treaty with a group of “cold ones”—vampires—who don’t hunt humans. Their leader is Carlisle Cullen. Bella is shocked but pretends not to be, promising to keep the secret.
