I due figli maggiori di Bach, Wilhelm Friedmann e Carl Philipp Emanuel, ebbero parte attiva, forse anche come interpreti, nella realizzazione dei Concerti destinati alle esecuzioni del Collegium Musicum di Lipsia: e in seguito coltivarono e interpretarono questa forma partendo dal modello paterno, ma per poi svilupparla in modo originale. Fu però il figlio più giovane, Johann Christian, a coltivare il genere del concerto – adesso con il fortepiano al posto del clavicembalo – e a rinnovarlo radicalmente adattandolo alla nascente forma sonata, e aprendo la strada al concerto classico e a Mozart in particolare
