 In the old days of analytics, engineers would spend hours fine-tuning the database to optimize query times for high-value workloads. The result was highly efficient analysis on-prem. Then along came the cloud with its remarkable scalaility. Need more compute? No problem! But with hardware and software often bundled, there's no incentive for that bespoke engineering. And up go the costs!

That's why some organizations are repatriating analytic workloads from the cloud.
