  • 21. Bonus Episode: Ranking Medieval Horse Art
    Jul 15 2025

Keely is still on vacation, so today's episode is going to be special for a few reasons. Firstly, we welcome Keagan's partner Jay who has very little knowledge of horses to the podcast. Secondly, this episode is a video so that you don't miss out on what we are seeing. Keagan and Jay rank medieval horse art based on their realism and on "vibes."

  • 19. Chincoteague Ponies and Marguerite Henry with Susan Friedland and Amanda Geci
    Jun 10 2025
In this episode of History from Horseback, Keagan and Keely welcome guests Susan Friedland and Amanda Geci to chat about Chincoteague ponies! Many animal and horse-lovers alike grew up reading the book "Misty of Chincoteague" or other horse-themed novels written by Marguerite Henry. But some may be surprised to learn that the islands of Chincoteague and Assateague are real places that continue to carry on the tradition of raising semi-feral ponies, or that Misty was in fact a real pony herself. After re-reading "Misty of Chincoteague" in 2018, Susan Friedland embarked on a two-year journey to uncover the life and legacy of author Marguerite Henry and her famous pony, Misty. That research became the heart of her acclaimed book "Marguerite, Misty and Me" and its young reader adaptation, which debuted in 2023 during Pony Penning Week on Chincoteague Island. Since 2013, Susan has shared her equestrian adventures and insights on her award-winning blog Saddle Seeks Horse. She’s also the co-host of Barn Banter by Horse Illustrated podcast and spends her days learning dressage with her off-track Thoroughbred, Tiz a Knight. (Instagram: @saddleseekshorse )Amanda Geci has been a lover of Chincoteague ponies since childhood. Seeing a need for a registry for the distinctive breed, Geci and her cohorts founded the International Chincoteague Pony Association and Registry (ICPAR) in 2020. She is now also the manager of the Chincoteague Pony Pedigree Database, manager of the color research website The Colorful Chincoteague, and co-manager of the Misty of Chincoteague website Misty’s Heaven. (Instagram: @mistysheaven )If you would like to learn more about Chincoteague Ponies and the Chincoteague Pony Swim, join Susan, Amanda, and some other experts at their June 30th fb webinar, An Insider's Guide to the 100th Chincoteague Pony Swim & Beyond! If you enjoy this podcast, please SUPPORT OUR PATREON or take a moment to rate and subscribe from wherever you're listening to HFH! • 15. Horseshoes
    Apr 15 2025

This episode Keagan and Keely chat about the mysterious history of horseshoes. We also get side-tracked by horses in video games, as we often do.

Have you ever heard of the hipposandal? How about the umugatsu? Before we started nailing U-shaped metal plates onto horse's feet, both were used as hoof coverings. And when did we make the transition in the first place? Today's episode attempts to answer these questions.

  • 14. Endangered Horse Breeds of North America (Pt.2)
    Apr 1 2025

This episode Keagan and Keely conclude our list of rare and endangered horse breeds from North America. Many of the horses we cover in this part are Spanish Colonial horses, a breed or group of breeds that can trace their roots back to Spanish colonies and conquistadors. Many strains of Spanish Colonial horse have remained genetically isolated for centuries and are rare due to this isolation.

Luckily, there were horse lovers whose passion for their favorite breed led them to action. Today we will recognize their efforts by exploring the rare and threatened breeds of equine originating from North America.
