Fugiu para o Brasil depois que a própria família denunciou sua noiva judia à Gestapo. Colaborou com a fundação da Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira em 1940, da qual foi primeiro flautista. Trouxe para o país idéias revolucionárias do dodecafonismo (organização da escala cromática em 12 notas). Criou o Grupo Música Viva que promoveu a música não só nos grandes centros, mas também no interior. Tom Jobim teve aulas com ele a partir dos 13 anos. Também foram seus alunos: Tom Zé, Moacir Santos, Paulo Moura, Tim Rescala, Isaac Karabtchevsky, Júlio Medaglia, entre outros.
