O pequeno Hans Günter ganhou sua primeira câmera aos nove anos e aos 15 fez um curso profissionalizante de fotografia no Museu Judaico de Berlim. Em 1939, os Flieg tiveram todos seus bens confiscados por serem judeus. No final daquele ano, conseguiram chegar em São Paulo. Nas quatro décadas seguintes, Hans Günter Flieg registrou o desenvolvimento industrial brasileiro, a evolução da arquitetura, do design e da publicidade no país, adquirindo fama de perfeccionista e revolucionando a técnica de iluminação e a própria linguagem da fotografia.
