On this week’s episode of “Hanni and the ‘Hawks,” Brian sits down with former Jayhawk football player and legendary Kansas broadcaster, David Lawrence, to look back on his nearly 50 years behind the mic of Kansas Athletics.

The two talk about David’s original path to Kansas as a tight end and offensive lineman in the late 1970’s, and then how he got his big break as a broadcaster with Tom Hedrick in the early ‘80’s. Lawrence describes playing for Don Fambrough, the challenge of jugging both coaching and broadcasting ambitions and what’s ensued in a storied career of both.

David also relives some of his biggest moments on the mic and names off the favorite players and teams he’s covered in 45 years as the KU football color analyst, 26 years doing men’s basketball pre and postgame and nearly a decade of women’s basketball color analysis as well.

March Madness is upon us and on this episode of “Hanni & the ‘Hawks” one of the key pieces of KU’s 1986 Final Four team, Calvin Thompson, drops by to reminisce on that special 35-4 season that culminated in Larry Brown’s first trip to the Final Four.

Between, Scooter, his brothers and his dad, the Barry boys have a combined 63 seasons of professional basketball experience, 3 NBA titles, 1 Olympic gold and 1 NCAA Championship – Scooter’s, as a member of that “Danny and the Miracles” team.

Scooter relives that legendary run in the spring of 1988, and talks about what it was like to play for Larry Brown and alongside KU’s all-time leading scorer, Danny Manning. Join the Voice of the Jayhawks, Brian Hanni, as he sits down with Brennan Bechard.
Brennan Bechard is in his 14th season with Kansas men’s basketball and currently serves as the program’s Director of Scouting. A Lawrence native, Bechard’s journey with KU spans nearly two decades, beginning as a graduate student manager in 2009, later serving as Assistant Director of Basketball Operations, and then Director of Basketball Operations from 2013–2019.

As a member of the Kansas staff, Bechard has been part of one of the most successful stretches in college basketball history, contributing to 10 Big 12 regular-season championships, five Big 12 Tournament titles, seven Sweet 16 appearances, five Elite Eights, two Final Fours, and the 2008 NCAA National Championship.

Before joining the staff, Bechard was an invited walk-on for the Jayhawks from 2007–09, lettering three seasons and earning three championship rings. He appeared in 35 career games, including five postseason contests, and started his final home game in Allen Fieldhouse against Texas.

A graduate of the University of Kansas with a degree in sport management, Bechard remains a proud product of Lawrence and a key piece of the Jayhawks’ sustained success.
