Hans Albers' größte Rolle als sehnsuchtsvoller Reeperbahn-Alleinunterhalter in Helmut Käutners Meisterwerk wurde zwar vom NS-Regime als propagandistischer Agfacolor-Kintopp in Auftrag gegeben. Doch dann war das für die Nazis viel zu viel Melancholie – und dann auch noch voller Antihelden. Der Film wurde verboten und erst nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg als sogenannter Überläufer gezeigt.
