Mit rund 85.000 Todesfällen pro Jahr ist die sogenannte Sepsis mittlerweile die dritthäufigste Todesursache in Deutschland. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO hatte die Sepsis bereits 2017 als „globale Bedrohung“ eingestuft. „Viele ahnen nicht, dass eine Blutvergiftung so gefährlich ist. Nur frühes Erkennen rettet Leben“, sagt Dr. Jessika Kreß, seit drei Monaten Chefärztin der Zentralen Notaufnahme an der Asklepios Klinik in Hamburg-St. Georg.
