About Gene

Coach Gene Clemons has lived on all sides of sports. He starred as a three-sport athlete in high school (football, basketball and track) and college where he majored in Journalism and Theater. After college he began his career as a teacher, coach, and journalist. In his 17-year professional career, Clemons has coached several future divisions one and NFL talents. He's been a head football, basketball and track coach, written for several local and national publications and broadcast football, basketball, baseball and track events. His daily Talk Spicy podcast is a morning staple for those in the sports world and his YouTube channel Coach Gene Clemons is a growing entity where you can find everything from prep broadcasts to his whiteboard breakdowns X and O The Joe's.     In this episode, Gene challenges the thought of Football in the Spring.

    While most media members ignored it or tried to paint a narrative that nobody was paying attention, the USFL just completed their first season. That culminated over July 4th weekend when the Birmingham Stallions defeated the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL Championship held in Canton Ohio. Fox Sports president Eric Shanks did not allow any speculation to begin when he announced last week that the USFL will return next season. The ratings have been steady throughout the season. Games averaged over a million viewers on Fox and NBC. Even when you add in the cable network games on USA Network and FS1 the averages were still 715,000. Those numbers were better than the NHL, Premier League and MLS in this country. All three of those entities people will argue with you that there is an appetite for those sports but not for Spring football.
