  • He Grew Up in Thailand… But Never Learned Thai 🇹🇭 || ANGUS HAMILTON (E157)
    May 6 2025

What happens when paradise becomes too popular? For Angus Hamilton, who has lived in Phuket since age three, the transformation of his childhood island is both fascinating and bittersweet. Beaches that once took 20 minutes to reach now require 90 minutes in traffic, and quiet shores are lined with sunbeds, umbrellas, and constant jet ski noise.

Growing up half-Thai in Phuket's international school system created a unique cultural dilemma for Angus. Despite his Thai heritage, he moved through childhood unable to speak his mother's language fluently — something he now describes as "a massive regret." His experience highlights the complex navigation of identity faced by third-culture kids caught between worlds, never fully belonging to either.

At 12, Angus was sent to boarding school in the UK, where he expected to finally find cultural belonging. Instead, he encountered a new form of otherness. Yet this transition proved transformative, particularly through structured sports programs that built his confidence and physical abilities through daily practice and weekly competitions against other schools.

After university in York and a brief period working in various jobs around Phuket, Angus now reflects on his journey with clarity. While appreciating the island's development — from Michelin-starred restaurants to diverse international cuisine — he also mourns what's been lost to mass tourism. As he plans his next move to London in about two years, he's actively reclaiming his Thai heritage by studying the language and exploring more of Southeast Asia.

Whether you're fascinated by cultural identity, interested in how tourism transforms places, or simply curious about growing up between East and West, this conversation offers rare insight into the evolution of both a person and a paradise island that changed too fast.
