About this listen
The first in a series of battles that came to be known as 'the race to the sea' — in this episode we zoom in on the French and German armies in Picardy as they scramble to encircle one another in the field. It's late September 1914, neither side can seem to outflank their opponent, and the line of barbed wire entrenchments across France is growing ominously longer by the day.
We'll cover:
- encounter battles
- Erich von Falkenhayn as Chief of the German General Staff
- the Picardy region in Great War history
