Gala is best known for her international hit 'Freed from Desire' which, 1. twenty years on, is still a cult classic and 2. shockingly still belongs to the exploitative record label she signed to in her early twenties.
Gala's dance anthem has been transformed into a football song chanted in stadiums around the world. Her words are household lyrics and since parting from her label, Gala has continued to make brilliant music independently.
Gala was an early adopter of feminist attitudes and LGBTQ rights. She created her label Matriarchy Records in the late 2000s – it's a record label for women by women.
This episode narrates the reality of putting out music in the 90s as a young female, a record label battle and the highs and lows of everything after.
