Y cuenta el evangelio según san Juan que, cuando el Bautista vio llegar por fin a Jesús ante él para bautizarse, lo anunció en voz alta otorgándole un título misterioso y solemne que sigue pronunciando la liturgia romana en Misa antes de comulgar: “Éste es el Cordero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo”. La imagen del cordero nos lleva al pasaje del profeta Isaías que presentaba al siervo del Señor como un cordero que se deja sacrificar sin quejarse para librarnos de todos los males (Is 53,7).
