Bei einer Plazentaablösung löst sich die Plazenta von der Gebärmutterwand bevor das Kind geboren wird. Dies ist für Mutter und Kind lebensbedrohlich und kann nicht rückgängig gemacht werden. Die Ursache ist in der Regel unbekannt.
Eine vorzeitige Plazentaablösung ist eine seltene Schwangerschaftskomplikation: nur in etwa 0,4 – 1,5 % aller Schwangerschaften kommt es dazu. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer kompletten Ablösung fällt noch geringer aus und liegt bei etwa 0,002 Prozent.
