Las primeras 48 horas fueron vitales: mientras bomberos de toda España llegaban al complejo para intentar apagar el fuego, muchos vecinos huían del pueblo ante el riesgo de una posible nueva explosión. Casimiro Sánchez Calderón, alcalde de Puertollano en aquel momento, cuenta cómo preparó al pueblo para intentar evacuarlo. José Luis Culebras, bombero que participó en la extinción del fuego, recuerda esos momentos en los que puso en juego su integridad para ayudar a sus compañeros.
