 A metà degli anni '80 l'heavy metal esplode in Europa e nel mondo. Accanto al mainstream, ai Metallica e agli Iron Maiden, nasce una scena underground che si diffonde ovunque: ragazzi giovanissimi si scambiano lettere, cassette e influenze. Fra questi ci sono due sedicenni norvegesi, Oystein e Jorn: si fanno chiamare Euronymous e Necrobutcher. Nel 1984 fondano la loro band, i Mayhem. Si fanno conoscere con la loro versione del black metal, il genere più estremo, veloce e satanico.
Dopo solo un paio d'anni, il gruppo rischia già di naufragare, come tanti altri. Poi però arriva un pacco con un odore strano…
