Among the military policemen who arrived at 544 Castle Drive on the morning of the MacDonald murders was Specialist Kenneth Mica. Mica was the MP who first approached a prone Jeffrey MacDonald, who was lying next to his wife, Colette, on the floor of the master bedroom. Mica shook MacDonald awake and then asked him: "What happened here?"

MacDonald proceeded to give a description of the intruders who had allegedly broken into the apartment and attacked his family. Among these intruders was a woman in a floppy hat. As it happened, Mica and his partner had, en route to 544 Castle Drive only minutes earlier, driven past a woman in a wide-brimmed hat on the corner of Honeycutt and North Lucas, a half-mile from the MacDonalds' residence.
