About this listen

On 20 March 1809 thousands of people gathered at York Castles Gallows.

It was a Monday, and Mondays were the day that murderers were executed.

As the crowd chattered, excited by the events of the day, Mary Bateman was led up the wooden steps to her death.

This is the tale of Mary Bateman who had earned herself the nickname, The Yorkshire Witch.
