About this listen

Margaret was a queer teacher, sniper, rebel, and union organizer. Like Constance Markievicz, she wasn’t interested in maintaining social norms or meeting social expectations. During Easter Rising, she broke social norms by frequently dressing in a masculine fashion and by serving as a sniper. After Easter Rising, she continued to support the IRA and the anti-treaty IRA in a militant capacity and went on hunger strike three times while serving a prison sentence during the Irish Civil War. After the war, she moved in with her partner, Nora O’Keefe and remained dedicated to trade union activism for the rest of her life.

Theme song: Arabesque Op.61 by Cécile-Chaminade
