I samurai erano la casta militare giapponese, famosi per maneggiare anche la katana. Emersi nel XII secolo, nel corso degli anni questi guerrieri sono stati impegnati non solo nel mestiere delle armi, ma anche nella burocrazia e nella pubblica amministrazione. I samurai seguivano un codice d’onore, il bushido, e in genere erano dotati di una cultura raffinata. Essi, però, costituivano anche una casta dominante in Giappone e in casi non rari commettevano soprusi sui ceti più umili.
