 Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler nasce a Vienna nel 1914. Nel 1937 s’imbarca sul transatlantico Normandie per fuggire da un matrimonio infelice e dal Nazismo. A bordo incontra il produttore cinematografico Louis B. Mayer che la fa sbarcare in America con un contratto e un nuovo nome: Hedy Lamarr. Come dice Marie Benedict nel suo La diva geniale (Piemme) “la sua bellezza le salvò la vita. La sua mente ha cambiato le nostre”. Infatti, forte dei suoi studi di ingegneria mai terminati, e in compagnia di Georges Antheil, amico e compositore, darà vita al “Secret Communication System”, la base per il sistema di localizzazione via satellite GPS e per la futura tecnologia wireless.
