Au sud de la mer de l’Ouest, au-delà des sables mouvants, entre la rivière rouge et l a rivière noire, siège une immense montagne du nom de Kunlun. La montagne est entourée d’un profond fossé rempli d’eau, au-delà du fossé, un mont qui s’enflamme éternellement : tout ce qu’on y jette brûle. Là-bas s’y trouve une personne portant un ornement de jade dans ses cheveux ébouriffés, avec des dents de tigre et une queue de léopard. Elle habite dans une grotte et aime rugir. On l'appelle Xiwangmu.
