 Il 16 aprile 1993, dopo mesi di attacchi da parte delle truppe serbo bosniache, l'ONU dichiara l'enclave di Srebrenica, dove si erano rifugiati i musulmani provenienti da tutto il Paese, zona protetta e smilitarizzata. Arrivano i caschi blu che oltre al mandato di impedire la conquista del territorio da parte delle forze serbe hanno quello di procedere alla smilitarizzazione delle forze musulmane di difesa dell'enclave.
