 Da bambino Ameen si vestiva con tanti strati di vestiti, era convinto che indossare giacche e occhiali lo avrebbe protetto dai proiettili. D’altronde, per Ameen la guerra è quasi la normalità: prima per il conflitto in Darfur, quando era ancora bambino, e poi per la guerra civile in Sudan, è stato costretto a fuggire già due volte in appena 23 anni. Due fughe, due viaggi, l’ultima fino in Egitto, attraverso il Sahara.
