Nella Lombardia del Seicento, sotto il dominio spagnolo, Renzo Tramaglino e Lucia Mondella si amano, nonostante gli ostacoli e i mille soprusi del signorotto della zona, Don Rodrigo, che, tramite i "bravi", impone la sua volontà con la forza. L'unico che potrebbe aiutare i due giovani a coronare il loro sogno d'amore è Don Abbondio che, per vigliaccheria, preferisce annullare le nozze.Dopo il fallito tentativo di celebrare il matrimonio cogliendo di sorpresa Don Abbondio, Renzo e Lucia, con l'aiuto del buon fra'Cristoforo, sono costretti a lasciare il loro paese. La ragazza, accompagnata dalla madre Agnese, si rifugia in un convento a Monza, mentre il suo promesso si reca a Milano con una lettera per un confratello del frate.
