 Raggiunta la popolarità a meno di 40 anni, Benny avrebbe potuto tranquillamente ritirarsi e vivere di rendita, ma non era il tipo. Preferiva passare il tempo tra studi di registrazione, sale da concerto e tournée in giro per il mondo. La sua notorietà arrivò a tal punto che durante la Guerra Fredda, quando l'Unione Sovietica decise di ospitare per la prima volta un’orchestra Jazz, venne chiamato proprio lui.
