 È una mattina come tante altre alla Pantglas Junior School. Gaynor, 8 anni, ha salutato frettolosamente i suoi fratelli Carl e Marylyn prima di entrare in classe. Ma la tranquillità si trasforma presto in terrore quando un rumore crescente e il tremolio delle luci annunciano una catastrofe. Una valanga di liquami e detriti travolge la scuola, seppellendo bambini e insegnanti. La tragedia, che ha causato la morte di 144 persone, tra cui 116 bambini, ha lasciato una ferita profonda ed ha cambiato per sempre le normative di sicurezza nelle miniere britanniche.
