 Fra il 700 e l’800 iniziò a consolidarsi l’idea che la Terra avesse la forma di un ellissoide ma con una superficie irregolare chiamata Geoide. Rappresenta questa una rivoluzione per la Geodesia (La disciplina che misura la Terra!) perché ha contaminato la geometria con la fisica.
