Gaugin, vemos que todos ellos fueron habituales consumidores de una ancestral y
peligrosa bebida: El ajenjo. El ajenjo (o absenta) era una bebida popular entre los artistas
bohemios de Montmartre, el barrio parisino que se convirtió en un centro de expresiones
artísticas como el impresionismo a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX.
Pocas bebidas alcohólicas poseen el halo místico y la maldición de la absenta o ajenjo era
conocida como el Hada Verde por sus seguidores, o el Diablo Verde por sus detractores.
Acusada de provocar alucinaciones, e incluso la locura, fue prohibida durante un siglo en
muchos países. En Francia y otros lugares aún hoy en día no se puede comprar.
