 Il primo settore spaziale a diventare economicamente remunerativo è stato quello delle Telecomunicazioni (SATCOM, dall'inglese "satellite communications"). Generalmente i satelliti SATCOM sono geostazionari, posti ad un’altezza di 36.000 Km. Il primo consorzio commerciale di TELCOM fu INTELSAT, società che fornisce servizi di comunicazione satellitare.
