 Daniel Defoe, nato a Londra nel 1660, è stato un giornalista e scrittore di famosissimi romanzi. Viene frequentemente indicato come il padre del romanzo inglese e ricordato soprattutto per essere l'autore del famoso Robinson Crusoe. Per più di quarant'anni si dedicò allo studio dei fantasmi e a tutto ciò che era attinente a questo specifico, ed espose le sue conclusioni nel saggio sulla realtà delle apparizioni del 1727. Tra i suoi racconti in questo ambito, nel 1714 scrisse “Il fantasma di Dorothy Dingley”. È opinione di molti critici che questi racconti si basino su fatti realmente accaduti.
