About this listen

Plus, bonus conversations with horsemen, horselovers and creatives. FAIR WARNING: This is not really a horse training podcast. We do talk about specifics but they are woven into a larger picture and are often quite advanced. In this episode, we started chatting about Fonz, a horse under Michael’s guidance who’s still hesitant about approaching a tarp at times even when he's quite confident to go over it.

That reluctance sparks a fascinating exploration of equine vision and how it shapes a horse’s confidence. We unpack the quirks of their eyesight—think blind spots, the difference between 20/20 clarity and near- or farsightedness, and how vertical perception (up and down) might throw them off more than we realize.

This made me thing of Mowgli too and my suspicions about his vision clarity in a way I haven't noticed on any horse before.

Are horses contextualizing textures and like we do, or is it all about trust in what they can’t quite see?

Join us for practical insights and unexpected conclusions that’ll change how you approach your next tarp challenge—or any spooky object in the arena.

    Episode: Feather’s Great Escape
On this episode, we cover a lot but I had a pretty cute story off the top. 🐴 My mule, Feather, two and a half and already “stately,” is a total escape artist. Caught her on the wrong side of the fence—blinked, and she’s back like a ghost. 👻 Tracks say she hopped out, maybe scooted under. A few days later I was gone and she hit the main road! A neighbor hero corralled her back to the barn, sweaty but unscathed. Is she jumping or slipping under? Spoiler: She was ducking under.

Catch me, Emma Daily Kline, and Michael Sparling LIVE every Thursday, 6:30 AM ET / 8:30 CT, on The Northwood Farms Facebook page! 📡 Want to keep the conversation going and stay more connected? Join us at horsemanshipinsider.com!
