Tras una intensa secuencia de sucesos históricos que impactaron al mundo con revoluciones y reformas legales en los años 50 del siglo XIX, en Colombia también surgieron cambios que marcaron la historia del país, el más trascendente hasta el momento: la abolición de la esclavitud gracias a una ley del 21 de mayo de 1851. Mujeres negras como Wiwa y Orika, mujer e hija de Benkos Biohó, Polonia de San Basilio de Palenqueo o Agustina de Tadó (Chocó), son solo algunas de las mujeres que dejaron memorias libertarias. Ellas lucharon doblemente por ser libres pues pelearon por su libertad como esclavas y por su emancipación como mujeres.
