Divorce = the legal ending of a marriage.
It’s when a husband and wife decide, through the courts, that they are no longer married and go their separate ways.
*1. Why people divorce*
There’s rarely just one reason. Common ones:
1. Communication breakdown - Constant fights, or no talking at all
2. Trust issues - Infidelity, lying, financial secrecy
3. Different values/goals - About money, kids, religion, where to live
4. Abuse - Physical, emotional, or financial. Safety comes first here
5. Growing apart - People change over years
6. Money stress - Debt, unemployment, different spending habits
*2. The process in Ghana*
1. Separation - Living apart. You can do this informally first
2. Petition - One person files for divorce at the High Court or Family Tribunal
3. Grounds - You must prove things like adultery, unreasonable behavior, desertion for 2+ years, or 2 years separation with agreement
4. Court decisions - The court settles custody of children, property sharing, and maintenance/spousal support
5. Decree - Once granted, the marriage is legally dissolved
Note: Traditional/customary marriages also have their own process through family heads before going to court.
*3. Impact*
On What it looks like
**Couples** Grief, relief, financial changes, loneliness, but also freedom to heal
**Kids** Can be hard at first. Stability, clear schedules, and "no bad-mouthing" helps them adjust
**Family/Community** Sometimes stigma, especially in church or traditional settings. But support systems matter a lot
**Money** Splitting assets, child support, new budgets for 2 households
*4. Things people wish they knew*
1. It’s a process, not an event - Emotionally it takes time. Be patient with yourself
2. Kids do best with peace - They can handle two homes better than constant conflict
3. Get help - Lawyer for legal, counselor/therapist for emotional, trusted friends/family for support
4. It’s not failure - Sometimes ending a marriage is the healthiest choice for everyone
*5. Alternatives to consider first*
- Counseling/Marriage therapy - To see if things can be repaired
- Mediation - A neutral person helps you talk and make agreements
- Legal separation - Live apart and sort finances without fully divorcing yet
Divorce is painful, but many people rebuild and find peace afterward. The goal is to end with as much respect and clarity as possible, especially if kids are involved.
If you’re going through this or know someone who is, do you want info on legal steps in Ghana, how to talk to kids about it, or ways to cope emotionally? I’m here to walk through whichever part you need.
