આ અધ્યાય રાજા જનમેજયના ગહન પ્રશ્નોના ઉત્તર આપે છે કે દેવકીના નિર્દોષ બાળકો કેમ માર્યા ગયા અને નારદે કેમ કંસને ઉશ્કેર્યો. વ્યાસજી 'ષડ્ગર્ભ' (છ બાળકો) ના પૂર્વજન્મના બે શ્રાપનું રહસ્ય ખોલે છે, જે તેમને બ્રહ્માજીનું અપમાન કરવાના અહંકાર બદલ અને બાદમાં પિતા હિરણ્યકશિપુનો વિશ્વાસઘાત કરવા બદલ મળ્યા હતા. આ કથા સિદ્ધ કરે છે કે કંસ અને નારદ તો માત્ર નિમિત્ત હતા; બાળકોનું મૃત્યુ તો તેમના પોતાના જ પ્રાચીન કર્મોનું અટલ 'પ્રારબ્ધ' ફળ હતું.
