Am 6. Oktober 1973, Yom Kippur, dem höchsten jüdischen Feiertag, griffen ägyptische und syrische Truppen gleichzeitig Israel am Golan und am Suezkanal an. Im Gefühl des Sieges von 1967 hatte Israel seine Sicherheit vernachlässigt und wurde vollkommen überrascht. Das Land stand kurzzeitig am Abgrund.
