Colonia Dignidad was supposed to be a christian compound, a model of German efficiency and example of communal living. Instead, it became a living nightmare for German citizens who immigrated to Chile with hopes of a better future. People were locked inside the compound, abused and tortured. Paul Schäfer, a former Nazi and child abuser had a chokehold on his followers and before long, he befriended Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Together, they devised an evil plan. Colonia Dignidad would become a secret detention center for anyone who opposed the Chilean government. Some say hundreds were murdered. Others say thousands. And the truth is, we will never know how many lost their lives at Colonia Dignidad
