"The Things" has earned the acclaim it's been awarded; an innovative take on the SciFi genre, it offers readers a perspective likely not considered independently, and does so extremely well.

Awards for "The Things":
Winner of the 2011 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Short Story.
Finalist for the 2011 Hugo Award for Best Short Story.
Finalist for the 2011 Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award.
Finalist for the 2011 BSFA Award for Best Short Fiction.
Finalist for the 2010 Parsec Award for short fiction (avdio version).

I've listened to this story several times and often enthusiastically share it with fans of the 1982 film The Thing (a quintessentially classic suspense/thriller featuring ground breaking inimitable SFX).

I do think it's very important to have at least a passing familiarity with the movie in order to be able to properly enjoy this story. Arguably this is the story's most significant flaw, but simultaneously it is the nature of the beast; similarly, one would most enjoy a sequel having first taken in the original work.

Despite the relative age of this story in Clarkesworld's extensive catalogue, it is read well. Your host and narrator Kate Baker is (as ever) a uniquely delightful talent.

A critically lauded expansion on The Thing (1982)
